The Duckman, or just Ducky for short, was a very interesting person and air talent.
He went from being my choice for morning drive to replace John Boy and Billy to being the first person I fired at WRQR.
I first met Ducky when I interviewed for the job at WRQR. It was very brief. Ducky was doing a remote at a gas station and I stopped by to check it out. You could tell he felt intimidated the whole time so I ended up leaving. I listened to him for the first time that night in my hotel room. There was something there...
It is hard to tell if Ducky is a genius or just plain goofy. I think the answer is somewhere in between. His on air style was well suited for nights in Wilmington, North Carolina. He was your buddy on the air. He was a bit nutty but it worked. Behind the scenes was a bit different story.
Ducky was just a part time talent for me at WRQR. He worked 2 live hours and then worked for another hour voice tracking the last few hours of the night show. He also did a live Sunday shift from noon to 6 pm. While he did this he also held a full time job for a vending machine company and also did mobile dj services. This lead to lots of problems Ducky being reliable. It was that, in fact, that lead me to fire him.
Looking back, I really wish I would have kept the Duckman....Could Ducky in the morning really have gone worse than 2 Guys Named Chris?
